It's Claim Freedom Monday Y'all!

Here's some wisdom to help you land your first client.

Wisdom From Me This Week

On Why You Need To Pick A Specialty

Marketing yourself as creatively fluid is trendy, but it will make it more challenging to close clients. Clients don’t care about all your different creative skills that you have. They care about how your creative skills can make or save them money. End of story. Starting out, pick a lane!

Offering folks too many options doesn’t make it easier for them to choose, it makes it harder. It’s like an album with 20something songs on it. You will overwhelm them and they won’t move forward with you.

When determining your creative specialty, ask yourself these three questions. 1. What’s something that I am naturally good at? 2. What’s something I obsess over? 3. What’s something that I have experience in that will also help my potential client? Answer that and you have your focus.

On Building Momentum As A Creative

When you’re just starting out, acting like a mysterious artist and only popping up occasionally will not do much to help you generate momentum in your freelance business. Like JaeTips with Saucony, you need to be as consistent as possible.

The marketplace is competitive and it’s only getting more crowded. The creatives that stand out above the rest deliver work that is truly unique and they do so consistently. Overtime, folks come to expect those things from them. It becomes their brand

If you want to build momentum as a freelance creative, pick a niche that you can dominate with ease, proceed to create the most unique work in your lane, and consistently get it in front of folks that need what your offer. The rest will handle itself and those that fronted.

On Personalizing You Approach With Clients

A fast way to run off a client is to assume you know the unique details of their problems before you’ve had a chance to speak with them about it directly. Pause and take a moment to hear where they’re coming from.

No one likes the feeling of someone they’re just getting to know, implying that they know the issues they’re facing better than they do. If you’re comfortable with coming off arrogant, making them feel unheard, and losing their business, then by all means, ignore my advice.

Or, avoid all of that by seeking to establish clear and open communication from the beginning. You can do this through a questionnaire or actually sitting to interview them. They will appreciate the personal attention.
